Canon 6D Mark II

Coupled with the standard 24-70mm f/2.8L II, the Canon EOS 6D Mark II was my first venture into full frame digital photography.  Equipped with the sharpest and clearest zoom Canon has made for the EF line, I was ready to move on from my APS-C Canon 80D and embrace the higher resolution and improved performance of a full frame sensor.

My first impression was how much bigger the body felt and how clear the viewfinder was!  I immediately headed out the door and started shooting all there was to see around my little town.  I had a few different trips planned coming up too and couldn't wait to see what I could capture next.  In addition, I just added the Canon 16-35 f/4L to round out my hiking, landscape shooter trinity (aka...not the full 2.8 lineup :).

Some don't care for the articulating screen, but I must say that I'd been able to get some really creative angles thanks to it with the 80D - where otherwise my face would have been buried in the dirt!  I chose this model because I could keep that same functionality and also save quite a bit of money over the 5D Mark IV.  After a while though I had some doubts on whether this was the right choice for what I was looking for, though.

As a landscape shooter, high resolution and dynamic range are two of the most important elements of a camera body for me.  The 80D I had was an amazing camera that I at times regretted selling, but quickly after I moved to the 6D Mark II to get access to the amazing full frame EF lenses I was quickly disappointed in the ~1.5 stop lower dynamic range vs. the 80D.  The extra 2 megapixels ended up not being enough to offset my disappointment when I tried to pull detail out of a shot of my favorite summer location.  The 80D would have recovered it, but the 6D2 struggled.

I just couldn't constantly bracket shots, and wasn't willing to sacrifice images due to noise.  So, after this trip I sold it and moved to the Canon EOS R.  Below are some of my favorites from this one though:
