Moment Smartphone Lenses

When I'm not out and about with my Canon EOS R and 24-70mm f/2.8L II, I attach my pocket 18mm Moment lens to my smartphone as a quick and easy wide angle photography replacement.  When weight is critical or the camera was forgotten at home, the Moment lenses elevate typical phone images into something much more compelling.

I'm not going to dive deep into the tech specs on the types of glass elements used, etc.  But, it is a terrific way to get that wide field of view that normally requires a DLSR to achieve.   Below are a few sample images that I managed to capture with my iPhone XR and Moment 18mm wide angle lens!

One thing though, because it is a wide angle lens with a pretty large and round front element, some of my shots caught a bit of lens flare.  There's not a big hood like a DLSR lens, so this can sometimes creep in.  But for a photo tool that weights about as much as your camera strap, this is a small price to pay for an affordable (~$100ish) tool to get some great shots!

I'm looking forward to trying out the new 14mm fisheye version as well since my camera pack is already getting too heavy.  This could be a sweet addition!  I'll be real though, the telephoto lens doesn't interest me too much.  It's just as expensive as the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and probably doesn't get nearly as good of compression or bokeh.

Just don't forget to get a smartphone case that is designed to hold the lens.  They don't just levitate in front of your phone lens :).  I personally recommend Nomad for their classy and outdoorsy options.
